And He is the Beginning
12 x 15″ image printed on 13 x 19″ paper
“And He is the Beginning, the first-born from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him. And through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him I say whether things on earth or things in heaven.” Col 1:18-20
This poster is a fairly classic illustration of the twenty-four elders worshiping before the Lamb with the exception of there being a small nativity pictured below. It became my desire to express with forms and pictures a relationship between the incarnation and the resurrection that impressed itself upon me as I worked with the text. This relationship is, simply put, that in Christ’s coming down we found our going up, and we find our going up to be with Him more to the point than we find His coming down to be with us since neither He nor we were born to stay here very long. For this the elders resurrected with him form something of a giant tulip shape blossoming high above that tiny hallowed head.

This was originally a Christmas card. Now poster size, it shows the hard edges, made by pen, as torn edges which adds a texture that I like. As is apparent my two distinct illustration styles are representational and figurative though sometimes a blend of both.

This print is a study in positive and negative space, and some staring may be necessary before it makes sense. Inspired by John Bunyan’s classic “the Pilgrim’s progress,” it depicts good and evil at war.

Inspiration for this drawing is from chapter 12 in “The Magician’s Nephew,” Book 1 in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Digory is on the unseen side of Fledge and Polly on the other, taking sanctuary under the horse’s wings. The three have been sent by Aslan on a dangerous mission for the protection of Narnia from the White Witch.
All 8.5 x 11″ prints are on Canon Infinity Edition Rag paper that is water-resistant and acid-free, designed to meet the longevity requirements of galleries and museums.
